BIOGRAPHYBodega live at Heb Celt Festival

WINNERS OF THE TITLE 'SCOTTISH FOLK BAND OF THE YEAR' AT THE 2009 SCOTTISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC AWARDS.....

Try to pigeon-hole them however much you will - tradtional, Scottish, Celtic or whatever - 'Bodega' can be summarised as quite simply a blistering and hugely diverse and talented young band that certainly tick all the above boxes - and then some besides!!!

The band met and formed at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton in 2005 and, such was their immediate prowess, within a year they had triumphed at the BBC 2 ‘Young Folk Musician of the Year Awards’ held in the Sage, Gateshead – a win that immediately sprung them headlong into the major festival circuit with successful appearances at Cambridge, Croperdy and Celtic Connections to name but three.

The word eclectic does not really do them justice, given the range of instruments they wield (all magnificently as it happens), not to mention the fact that they also sing in both Gaelic and ‘English’.........er Scottish!  Bodega at Edinburgh Castle with First Minister Alex Salmond

The band are unquestionably musically mature beyond their years, being – Gillian Chalmers from Fraserburgh on pipes, whistles and fiddle; Ross Couper from Shetland on fiddle; Tia Files from Oban on guitar, bass guitar and percussion; Norrie MacIver from Lewis on vocals, accordion, guitar and percussion and last, but certainly not least, June Naylor from Skye on Clarsach (Scottish harp).

The band released their first eponymously titled album on the famed Greentrax label in 2006 and the eagerly anticipated follow up 'Under the Counter' was released in July, 2008. A new album is now planned for early 2011.

Although still young the band are already veterans of the international festival and concert circuit, especially in the UK, Italy and North America, where they have already secured a firm foothold on the major festival circuit and have been likened to a “young Altan” – praise indeed!!! Bodega

In 2009 the band showed just how far they have come by winning the coveted title of 'Scottish Folk Band of the Year' at the hugely prestigious Scottish Traditional Music Awards.

If you’re looking for a vibrant, diverse, committed and hugely talented band of young people , who take the finest traditions of Scottish music, give it a fiercely modern twist and hot blast of energy and who will guaranteed to set the heather on fire for you – Bodega are certainly the band who fit the bill, and then some!!!!
