CHECK OUT BODEGA FIRING UP THE SHETLAND FOLK FESTIVAL IN 2007 - CLICK HERE
Try to pigeon-hole them however you will – traditional, Scottish, Celtic or whatever - ‘Bodega’ are unquestionably a blistering young band that most certainly tick all the boxes – and then some!!!!
The band met and formed at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton in 2005 and, such was their immediate prowess, within a year they had triumphed at the BBC 2 ‘Young Folk Musician of the Year Awards’ held in the Sage, Gateshead – a win that immediately sprung them headlong into the major festival circuit with successful appearances at Cambridge and Celtic Connections to name but two.
The word eclectic does not really do them justice, given the range of instruments they wield (all magnificently as it happens), not to mention the fact that they also sing in both Gaelic and ‘English’.........er Scottish!
The band are unquestionably musically mature beyond their years, being – Gillian Chalmers from Fraserburgh on pipes, whistles and fiddle; Ross Couper from Shetland on fiddle; Tia Files from Oban on guitar, bass guitar and percussion; Norrie MacIver from Lewis on vocals, accordion, guitar and percussion and last, but certainly not least, June Naylor from Skye on Clarsach (Scottish harp) The band released their first eponymously titled album on the famed Greentrax label in 2006 and the eagerly anticipated follow up 'Under the Counter' was released in July, 2008.
TO CAP IT ALL THE BAND HAVE BEEN NOMINATED IN THE CATEGORY 'BEST UP AND COMING ACT' IN THE SCOTTISH TRAD MUSIC AWARDS 2008

Although still young the band are already veterans of the international festival and concert circuit, especially in the UK, Italy and North America, where they have already secured a firm foothold on the major festival circuit and have been likened to a “young Altan” – praise indeed!!!
It’s safe to say that their star is still very much on the rise and, given what they have achieved in such a short space of time, it’s exciting to think just where this band could still take things.
If you’re looking for a vibrant, diverse, committed and highly talented band of young people , who take Scottish traditional music, give it a fiercely modern twist and who will guarantee to set the heather on fire for you – Bodega are certainly the band who will fit the bill.
