Not to overstate the case J.P.Cormier, who hails from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is a legend back home in his native Canada, indeed across North America as a whole.
An awe-inspiring, breath-taking and indeed international award-winning singer / songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (he plays guitar, banjo, fiddle and mandolin, to name but a few) JP was self taught from the age of 5 and quickly became immersed in the rich musical heritage of his Cape Breton roots, while also feeding off the guitar styles of his musical heroes Chet Atkins and Doc Watson.
By the age of 9 he was considered a “genuine prodigy”, winning his first guitar competition against 30 other musicians, all of whom exceeded him not only in age but also in experience. By his mid teens it was clear he could play almost any stringed instrument he picked up, however it was his guitar playing than shone through – as it still does.
A move to the US led to 10 years of increasingly high profile live appearances, not to mention session work and live shows with legends the likes of Waylon Jennings, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Charlie Louvin and Vince Gill – making many appearances at venues such as the Grand Ole Opry.
Since his return to Canada he has released 10 award winning recordings and as a live performer JP is internationally renowned for his quite incredible guitar playing, instrumental prowess and flawless delivery of ‘story songs’ (many based on true events), with many of these having now been covered by countless artists from across North America and far beyond. JP’s impressive body of work has earned him not only a vast and loyal fan base, but also multiple award nominations and once heard you will understand why.
JP brings his dazzling compositions and finger work to the stage around 250 nights a year and is normally accompanied by his wife Hilda Chiasson-Cormier on piano and vocal and Darren McMullen, another multi-instrumentalist. JP is also available as a solo artist or duo format.
