Mairi Campbell & David Francis
Husband and wife team Mairi Campbell and David Francis (aka The Cast) have been working as a duo since meeting in the early 1990's when Mairi returned to her home city of Edinburgh after living, studying and working in London for a number of years.
They called their duo The Cast, although they now prefer to perform under their own names. Mairi and David have a deep love of traditional music of all kinds, but reserve a particular place for the work of Robert Burns, the fiddle music of Scotland and also its rich ballad heritage.
Since forming the hugely successful duo they have performed extensively throughout the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Europe and North America and also featured on many BBC Scotland broadcasts, while to date they have also released three albums. In 2007 the song 'Smile or Cry' from the album 'Greengold' was one of the winneers of 'Burnsong' - a national bi-annual songwriting competition.
In 1999 they performed their classic rendition of 'Auld Lang Syne' (as recorded on their Winnowing album) on the US TV special 'Kennedy Centre Honors', which on that occasion was honouring a fellow Scot - film legend Sean Connery. Among the many prestigeous guests in attendance was the then president of the USA Bill Clinton and his wife Hilary.
Their version of perhaps Scotland's best known and most loved ballad has subsequently appeared as part of the soundtrack of the Hollywood movie version of 'Sex and the City', while Mairi is due to perform the song at the closing ceremony of Liverpool's 'Year of Culture' (2008) alongside the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2007 Mairi was voted 'Best Scottish Singer' at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards
