Mairi for Liverpool
November 30, 2008
Mairi Campbell is to perform her unique version of the legendary Scottish traditional ballad 'Auld Lang Syne' at the closing ceremony of Liverpool's 'Year of Culture' celebrations in the city on New Year's Eve 2008.
For this particular rendition Mairi will be backed by no less than the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Sadly though her husband and duo partner David Francis will not be able to accompany Mairi on this occasion as he is on ceilidh duty back home in Scotland.
This is another in a growing line of prestigeous 'outings' for this version of the song which Mairi originally recorded with David for their album 'The Winnowing'. In the recent past they have performed the song on an American TV special honouring Scottish movie legend Sean Connery (in front of then president Bill Clinton and his wife Hilary) and more recently the track featured on the soundtrack of the Hollywood film 'Sex and the City'.
Mairi and David are also due to perform the song at a very special Celtic Connections 'Auld Lang Syne' concert on the 24th January in the main auditorium of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall - alongside a stellar cast that includes living legend Odetta, Eddi Reader, Dick Gaughan, Karen Matheson (Capercaillie) Michael Marra, Dougie MacLean, Emily Smith, John McCusker and Phil Cunningham.
