Shetland Bus Gig

November 14, 2011

Davie Gardner, manager of Atlantic Edge Music Services, will join Jenna and Bethany Reid (and their band) onstage at the Catstrand Theatre, Dumfries on Sunday the 27th November to provide the on-stage narration for their latest 'Shetland Bus' concert that evening.

The 'Shetland Bus' was the name given to a series of secret operations (and hazardous sea voyages) that took place between Shetland and German-occupied Norway between 1941 and 1945. These highly dangerous missions took place across the North Sea, mostly in small fishing vessels (often secretly converted for the job) with no lights and at constant risk of discovery by German aircraft and patrol vessels. Crossings - carrying refugees from Norway, plus commandos, supplies and ammunition back into Norway to support the resistence fighters on the return legs - were invariably made during the dark nights and stormy conditions of severe northern hemisphere winters!!! Many lives, invariably young, were lost during these trips and throughout the operation in general.

The Shetland Bus concerts (and also the previously released CD 'Escape') specifically tells the story of Norwegian resistence fighter Jan Baalsrud, his part in the 'Shetland Bus' operation and ultimately the story of his incredible and near-death escape - across hazardous and unforgiving terrain - from the Nazi's in Norway, after they intercepted and attacked the vessel he was on during the Shetland Bus operation.

Davie Gardner said "I'm very excited and indeed honoured to be involved with a group of such wonderful musicians and a terrific concert such as this - especially given it's not only brilliant from a musical perspective but also so steeped in the history of Shetland itself"
