Steve Earle in Shetland
September 21, 2010
American music legend Steve Earle performed a gig in Lerwick's Clickimin Leisure Centre on 9th September 2010 in front of 600 local fans - part of a very short UK tour which also included gigs in Dublin, Cardiff, Cambridge and Dunfermline.
The Lerwick gig was a replacement for one that had originally been due to take place in December 2009 as part of the 50-date European tour schedule to promote his 'Townes' album. Unfortunately that particular gig had to be cancelled due to fog disrupting travel plans, but Steve promised at the time that he would return to Shetland asap - and this concert proved him to be as good as his word.
In pre-visit interviews with the Shetland Times and Radio Shetland he hinted that the show would, in effect, be a greatest hits package - and so it was, with classics such as Copperhead Road, My Old Friend the Blues, Someday, Galway Girl, Rich Man's War and Devil's Right Hand all in the set during the evening.
At the end of the show Steve informed the faithful that he planned to return to Shetland, hopefully next year, with his band 'The Dukes' - now that should be something really special - and loud!!!
Support for the evening came in the form of local singer / songwriter Duncan Phillips who received an extremely enthusiastic response from the audience into the bargain.
