BIOGRAPHY
Hailing from Orkney and originally formed in 2004 ‘The Chair’ have subsequently gone on to international acclaim and are now in huge demand and a firm favourite on the UK and European festival circuit.
They
initially came together with a view of simply filling dance floors at the
Orkney Folk Festival, but since then things have moved on a-pace for the band
in terms of a wider-ranging style and approach, which still fills dance floors but also more than fits the bill for those who simply want to sit back and listen to a terrific mix of traditional and contemporary music and song.
However, the Chair have never lost sight of that original ethos – play great music, get people dancing and having a good time and, most of all, have fun yourselves while you’re doing it!!! It’s an approach that has stood them in increasingly good stead ever since – and don’t their audiences, and indeed those hard-to-please music critics, know it!!!
The
eight piece line up (featuring two fiddles, accordion, mandolin, guitar, banjo, bass,
drums / percussion and vocals) certainly creates a hugely dynamic and expansive
sound, incorporating traditional influences from Orkney, Scotland, Ireland and Europe in
general – while also drawing additional inspiration from rock music to salsa
and funk to jazz and Zydeco. A heady and full-blooded mix and no mistake and one that, as we've said before, is guaranteed to get the most reserved audience throwing inhibitions to the wind and heading for the dance floor.!!!
In 2007 they made their initial mark outside Orkney when they literally swept to victory on the ‘Danny Kyle Open Stage’ at Celtic Connections, before they went on to successfully play the festival in their own right a year later. Other large festival bookings have subsequently and consistently flowed in.
In
2008 ‘The Chair’ received a major thumbs-up from the ‘industry’ and public
alike when they were voted ‘Scottish Folk Band of the Year’ at the Scottish
Traditional Music Awards.
The band currently have one album to their name - the much lauded ‘Hunika’ – but are now in the process of recording the follow up, due for release in early 2012.
