Trads Triumph
3 December 2009
Two artists signed to Atlantic Edge Music Services artist roster triumphed at this years Scottish Traditional Music Awards held in Dumfries, with a third also nominated for an award at the same event.
Fiddlers Bid won 'Album of the Year' for their new album 'All Dressed in Yello
w' while Bodega picked up the trophy in the Folk Band of the Year category.
Fiddlers Bid's new album was only released in August this year, but from the outset has attracted rave reviews.
The band decided to go it alone label wise after releasing three very successful albums via the famed Scottish label Greentrax. They also "went for broke" by recording 'All Dressed in Yellow' at the state of the art recording studio in London owned by none other than Dire Strait's frontman Mark Knopfler.
The gamble paid off with what many describe as their finest album to date now being recognised as such by the Scottish music voting public at the Trad Awards.
The band will be undertaking a major tour in April 2010 to further raise the profile of the album. Dates will be announced here very shortly.
Picking up the award band member Andrew Gifford hinted at how much time and effort had gone into making the album and that they were delighted to receive such a prestegious award for all the hard work and ultimately the end result.
Meanwhile Bodega also came up trumps in another major category at the awards, winning the accolade of 'Folk Band of the Year' at the ceremony held in Dumfries DG One venue.
This success follows their first major triumph back in 2006 when they won the BBC Young Folk Musicians of the Year award after only one year together as a unit.
Here again of course there is a Shetland connection with fiddler Ross Couper hailing from the islands.
Norrie MacIver, front-man with the band, said "It was great just to be nominated in such a well contended and prestegious category along with terrific artists such as Malinky, but it's even more amazing to have actually won the award. The band are over the moon. This genuinely means a great deal to us".
Also nominated, and deservedly so, in the same category as Bodega were another group represented by Atlantic Edge Music Services ~ Mary Ann Kennedy & Na Seoid.
Davie Gardner - Manager of Atlantic Edge Music Services - said of the awards " The Scottish Traditional Music Awards are now one of the most important events and indeed highlights of the Scottish music year. For me and my company to be associated with three such great acts as those nominated here tonight, let alone the fact that two ultimately won major awards, is a great honour for me personally and also hopefully an indication of the quality of artist we are associated with at Atlantic Edge Music. I am very proud indeed to work with such great musicians, award winners or not.
Note: Congratulations should also go to the following Shetland related artists who were also nominated at the awards: Steve Spence - In the composer of the year category; Maggie Adamson & Brian Nicolson in the 'Up-and-Coming Artist of the Year' category and Kevin Henderson also nominated as part of Session A9 who were included in the 'Live Act of the Year' category.
Congratulations also go to fiddler Lauren MacColl who won the award of 'Instrumentalist of the Year' at the same ceremony. Lauren of course is the partner of Chris Stout of Fiddlers Bid.

All in all a great night for all those involved and indeed Shetland as a whole.
